An existing 22,000-square-foot warehouse in Wilson, NC was transformed to support the storage and production needs of Liberty and Plenty Distillery as they expanded to a second location in North Carolina. The space was subdivided to create a new barrel room featuring wood barrels filled with distilled spirits. The project required careful coordination with building and fire code requirements, as traditional storage methods presented unique challenges. Through the use of provisions within the International Building Code, the facility was able to incorporate wood barrel storage of spirits while meeting safety standards.
A new NFPA 13 fire sprinkler system was installed throughout the building, along with a required fire pump to support the existing city water pressure at the site. The renovation also included upgrades to the existing restrooms and office mezzanine, along with accessibility improvements that brought the entire facility into compliance. The completed project modernized the warehouse while creating a safe, functional, and fully accessible space for continued operations.
This project was provided to the Owners via the Design-Build delivery method with Gontram Architecture.
